A SHORT HISTORY OF THE CHEESECAKE

Did you know that the Cheesecake is the oldest tart in the world that we still enjoy today? According to tradition, a white cheesecake with honey was already served to the athletes during the celebration of the first Olympic Games in 776 b.c. But the version how we know it was initially created in 1545 with a French cheese as the base for the filling.

In 1872, a dairy farmer from Chester, New York, tried to reproduce this French cheese, but it didn’t work out as expected. His result would later be known as cream cheese and changed Cheesecake forever.

Most sources agree that it was Arnold Reuben, owner of Reuben’s Restaurant and Delicatessen, is credited with creating the New York cheesecake that we know today in the 1920s.

Now recognized as one of America's favorite treats, July 30th has been the date chosen in the United States for the annual celebration of National Cheesecake Day.
