A SHORT HISTORY OF THE BROWNIE

We all know that the Brownie is an American invention. But what many people don’t know, is that it was created in Chicago in 1893 for the World’s Columbian Exposition. The chef at The Palmer House Hotel in Chicago was asked to create a dessert that could be tucked into a lunchbox for ladies to eat while attending the Columbian Exposition.

The result was a super-rich, fudgy-chocolate confection – the Palmer House brownie. They are still served today at what is now The Palmer House Hilton in Chicago. Over the years, recipes varied but the popularity of this treat never faded. The brownie's fame crossed borders, becoming a beloved treat in Europe. Today, it's a global favorite, celebrated annually on December 8 as National Brownie Day in the United States
