This creation, made for an Imperial Chancellor's dinner, soon became a favorite at the Austrian court. Franz Sacher's legacy continued as his son, Eduard, refined the recipe at the prestigious Demel bakery, eventually establishing Hotel Sacher near the Vienna Opera House. Yet, a legal dispute, famously dubbed "The Original Cake War" or “Vienna’s Chocolate Cake War” ensued between Hotel Sacher and Demel bakery over the rights to the cherished recipe. In the end, the new owners of Hotel Sacher were victorious and could claim the original recipe.
Despite the courtroom drama, both establishments continue to offer their interpretations of the Sachertorte, each claiming a slice of its rich history.
