Nutrition is a living science that must adapt to the unique needs and challenges of individuals. In today’s world, we are confronted with growing numbers of obesity, non-communicable diseases, and malnutrition, which can be linked to an unbalanced diet. In addition, the aging population and new research related to intolerances need to be considered when addressing these consumer groups with targeted solutions.

There is a clear need for solutions that go beyond the ‘one-size-fits-all’. A growing aging population has different dietary needs than regular adults. 1 in 3 people worldwide struggle with moderate to severe food insecurity which raises the question for affordable and nutrient-dense food all over the world. Understanding these differing dietary needs and statistics is crucial in developing nutritional solutions.

Addressing the targeted nutrition trend

High protein: The World Health Organization’s guidelines recommends a daily intake of 0.75g protein/kg of body weight, from different animal and plant-based sources. Although there is no protein deficiency worldwide, certain groups are recommended to consume higher amounts:

  • Elderly: Increased protein helps reducing age-related muscle deterioration and prevent sarcopenia.
  • People in recovery: Protein supports healing and tissue repair.
  • Undernourished people: When food is scarce, adequate protein intake is at risk​.
  • People that want to lose weight: Protein reduces hunger and manages appetite. This will help you eat less fats or carbohydrates.
  • Sports people: Protein supports muscle recovery and strength.
